While it’s difficult to nail down one perfect definition, a maker is generally-speaking someone who creates or makes with his or her own hands. In recent years, an entire maker-culture has developed through an influx of DIY websites, maker faires and even crowd-funding organizations that encourage users to bring their own ideas to fruition rather than waiting for someone else. In a world where blackbox technology is readily available, younger generations have lost the drive (or perhaps the opportunity) to explore how something works – and with humans innately curious as to the inner workings of an object or a machine, it seems counterintuitive to remove ourselves from the very core of what actually brought us to our society’s current advancements.

Life skills that were part of everyday life for our parents – how to change a tire or sew on a button, how to bake a cake or work with wood – had been left to antiquity until human nature started leading us back. With a plethora of information now available at our fingertips people are being drawn to do, to make and to transform. Makers see opportunities for creation and choose to tinker with ideas until innovations are born.

The maker movement is a growing community of dreamers and builders who find satisfaction in everything from robotics and 3-D printing to handmade jewelry and other self-made goods. By cultivating this renaissance of creative thinking through workshops, seminars and communities, we are paving the way for future generations to ask questions and look for solutions. The next time you think to yourself, ‘How does that work’ or ‘I could do that,’ don’t let it slip away as a passing thought – instead, seek out a local coworking space or maker community and join the conversation. Who knows, you may just have the next big thing.
